Why AI Ethics and Bias Matter to Everyone
Consider a time when an AI system gets to decide who goes home with the job, the loan, or crucial health care. Now consider this AI system has bias. This happens because AI learns through history, and there's always the possibility that societal bias could be absorbed unknowingly by the AI system then magnified in actual choice decisions. This would thus perpetuate unfairness in finances, health care, employment, and law enforcement. Sources of bias in AI are imbalanced or skewed datasets, diversity shortcomings in the development teams, and biased algorithms. What would result? Some might suffer because of discrimination as no loan was issued to others, or wrong diagnoses would come from the health industry, or wrong identities by the surveillance systems. There will always be an escape from such a situation. More representative usage of data, fair algo design, and regular audits will make AI systems more transparent and fairer. Ethical AI practice is no longer a choice but a nece...
